03.10.25 12:29 #13578 Automated future at CCA 2025
Doing more with less: Rakuten Symphony and regional carriers chart automated future at CCA 2025

September 30, 2025

The CCA Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas, from September 15-17, 2025, was a dynamic event for regional operators struggling with an increasingly complex and demanding telecommunications landscape. As highlighted in our conference preview story, our involvement in the convention was aimed at showcasing how automation and an open ecosystem can position these carriers for success.

Do more with less
The discussions and dialogue throughout the convention underscored one daunting and clear motif: regional operators need to do more with less.

This mandate is driven by several factors, including increasing customer expectations, the voracious need for additional bandwidth, and the constant challenge of juggling these growth curves using limited personnel and finite budget. Regional carriers, which have smaller personnel and tighter budgets than national carriers, are under tremendous pressure to deliver high-quality, reliable services while chasing new revenue streams and optimizing existing infrastructure.

Role of automation
It was this same challenge that was the basis of our conversations at the Rakuten Symphony booth. We saw keen interest in how automation could be the key to lessening the burden on these carriers. Several operators stopped for detailed conversations and 1:1 demos of our OSS platform. The reality that our OSS could simplify operational complexity, like zero-touch provisioning, resonated with them. Think about the possibility of automating routine tasks that previously consumed valuable human hours – from network configuration to service activation. This is not only a matter of efficiency; it is a matter of freeing qualified personnel to consider strategic initiatives and customer innovation, rather than being bogged down in manual processes.

Open ecosystem approach
Our open ecosystem philosophy, a cornerstone of Rakuten Symphony's philosophy, was also underscored by the welcome presence of our partners, 1Finity and Supermicro, at our booth. Their presence allowed us to tell a whole story about how a broad array of best-in-class solutions can be stitched together seamlessly to create an automated, resilient network. This openness is essential for regional carriers who need agile, scalable solutions that are not tied to a single vendor.

One of the highlights of our participation was the seminar, "Automated software-driven cloud-native networks – real-world best practices," which drew a big audience eager to listen to industry specialists. Moderated by Sandeep Panthula, Head of Technical Sales, Americas, Rakuten Symphony, the panel was dense in expertise.

Anshul Bhatt, Head of Business, OSS, Americas, Rakuten Symphony, emphasized that "the right processes around automation are a must for any carrier." He drew a forceful analogy to the evolution of mobile app stores, which were closed systems initially. When opened, their popularity soared, demonstrating the power of an open ecosystem. Bhatt argued that the same principle applies to network operators: embracing the open network mentality, facilitated by robust automation, can bring unmatched success and innovation.

Rakuten Mobile RAN Chief Architect Vinay Vij stressed the essential priority of a forward-thinking approach to automation, whereby "automation has to be a practice from day 1 of operations." Not an afterthought, but a primary foundation for building efficient and resilient networks. Vij also underscored the pivotal role Open RAN must play in enabling this level of automation, providing the architectural openness that will allow dynamic and software-driven operations.

Dr. Femi Adeyemi, VP Strategic Product Management, 1Finity, confirmed the cross-industry shift to open architectures, noting that "every RFP he sees includes Open RAN as a requirement." This indicates that there is overt market demand for the flexibility and vendor diversity enabled by Open RAN. Dr. Adeyemi continued to describe how "with a best of breed approach, operators can turn to automation to bring all the pieces together," effectively addressing the challenge of integrating various technologies together into an open framework.

The real-world impact of automation was realized by Wes Burnett, CTO, Viaero. He gave a strong example of how cell site provisioning that took days can now be accomplished in 30 minutes using automation. Such a drastic reduction in deployment time translates directly into faster service delivery, improved customer satisfaction, and significant cost savings – a direct answer to the "do more with less" challenge.

The CCA Annual Convention was an excellent opportunity for Rakuten Symphony to engage with the regional carriers and understand their individual pain points. The enormous interest in our OSS platform, the lively debate on automation, and the compelling arguments from our panelists only reinforced our belief that an automated, cloud-native, and open ecosystem approach is not a future vision, but an immediate necessity for these operators. We look forward to continuing the productive discussions initiated at the event with these forward-thinking operators and ushering them into a future, where doing more with less is not just possible, but the new standard.

03.10.25 17:31 #13579 Highlights in AI, Open RAN, and Intelligent .
FutureNet Asia 2025: Top 5 highlights in AI, Open RAN, and Intelligent Growth

October 2, 2025

FutureNet Asia 2025 in Singapore was a momentous event for Rakuten Symphony. From winning industry recognition to driving forward-looking discussions with global operators, our presence at the show was all about forging connections, showcasing innovation, and presenting to the region’s operators how they can succeed with Intelligent Growth.

Throughout the show, we kept the focus on our technology and partnerships that deliver end-to-end AI-native solutions, from Open RAN to Cloud to OSS. These demonstrations illustrated how Rakuten Symphony is helping operators implement Intelligent Growth to deliver efficiency, profitability, and long-term competitiveness.

Award-Winning Innovation

One of the highlights came when our Rakuten Cloud-Native Orchestrator software won the “Orchestrator Award.” The solution allows customers to enable seamless scaling from edge to core, hyper-automation, day 1/2 life cycle management and one-click application onboarding.

Intelligent Conversations with Global Leaders

Our leadership team took center stage across a featured fireside chat and panel discussions, driving meaningful dialogue on the industry’s most pressing challenges:

Sharad Sriwastawa, President of Rakuten Symphony, explored how operators can unlock new revenue streams by monetizing 5G and AI data during a fireside chat with Roy Chua of AvidThink.

Vivek Murthy, President of the OSS Business Unit, joined Singtel, Axiata, and True Corp to explore what the “Future Telco in the AI Era” will look like. He also authored an insightful article, sharing his perspective on the future of telcos in the AI era.

Sachin Verma, Chief Data & AI Officer at Rakuten Mobile, outlined how data-driven AI will shape the next decade, alongside leaders from BT, Dialog Axiata, ABI Research, and Comarch.

The Intelligent Growth Series

We brought our Intelligent Growth framework to life through a series of discussions hosted by Network Media Group. Together with executives from Singtel, Axiata, Telstra, Vodafone, StarHub, Telenor, and NTT Docomo, Rakuten Symphony leaders highlighted how telecom operators can align innovation with business fundamentals to achieve sustainable growth. These were great conversations, and we encourage you to check them out.

Driving Open RAN Innovation

A major announcement at the event underscored our commitment to network transformation: Rakuten Symphony and Grameenphone, a Telenor Group company, launched a pilot Open RAN deployment serving many of its 86 million customers throughout Bangladesh. The project includes CU/DU infrastructure, 4G/5G radio units, and OSS solutions, enabling Grameenphone to pioneer Open RAN in its market and drive new levels of network innovation.

FutureNet Asia 2025 showcased how Rakuten Symphony is not only advancing technology but also collaborating with operators to create next-generation networks that benefit from Intelligent Growth.

Japanese OTA Rakuten Travel launches AI agent to assist users find accommodations meeting their needs, based on reviews and booking trends

Oct 02, 2025

Rakuten Travel, one of the largest OTAs in Japan, has launched an AI agent ‘Rakuten Travel AI Hotel Search’ that assists a user to find hotel or ryokan candidates meeting needs, based on reviews and the booking trend analysis data.

The service is available with free of charge. Answers come out, when users enter their desired accommodation location, area, duration, number of people, composition, budget, accommodation type, facilities, services, and other conditions in a conversational format using the text input field.
Even if users enter requests or abstract instructions that do not fall within Rakuten Travel's existing search criteria, the AI understands their needs as best it can through dialogue with the users.

Rakuten Travel AI Hotel Search displays up to 30 appropriate accommodations. Users can compare overviews, such as ‘AI recommended points,’ and the location of each facility on a map in a list, and also it is possible to arrange conditions such as the date of stay and accommodation facilities on the results screen.

04.10.25 22:32 #13585 Global Connectivity Revolution
AST SpaceMobile Soars on Breakthrough Space-Based Cellular Test, Eyeing Global Connectivity Revolution

October 02, 2025

Key players in this unfolding narrative include AST SpaceMobile itself, led by its visionary team, and its strategic partners, most notably Bell Canada (TSX: BCE). Bell's involvement in the recent test highlights the critical role mobile network operators (MNOs) play in integrating this space-based solution into existing cellular ecosystems. AST SpaceMobile has cultivated partnerships with over 50 MNOs worldwide, collectively serving nearly 3 billion subscribers, including Vodafone (LSE: VOD), AT&T (NYSE: T), and Rakuten Mobile (TYO: 4755). These collaborations are essential for the global deployment and adoption of the technology. The initial market reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with retail investor sentiment turning "bullish" and a 341% increase in 24-hour message volume on platforms like Stocktwits, reflecting widespread optimism about the company's future and its potential to disrupt the telecommunications industry.

Crucially, AST SpaceMobile's strategic partners are also poised for significant gains. Major MNOs like AT&T (NYSE: T), Vodafone (LSE: VOD), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Bell Canada (TSX: BCE), and Rakuten Mobile (TYO: 4755) are leveraging this technology to extend their network reach into remote and geographically challenging areas where traditional infrastructure is impractical or too costly. For instance, AT&T has a commercial agreement with AST SpaceMobile until 2030, involving revenue sharing and the use of its 850 MHz spectrum, while Bell Canada's successful test paves the way for a planned low Earth orbit service deployment in 2026. Tech giants like Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL), with over $150 million invested, are collaborating on integrating these services with Android devices, potentially enabling seamless satellite connectivity for billions of smartphone users. Nokia (HEL: NOKIA), having secured a five-year 4G and 5G deal, and American Tower (NYSE: AMT), a global operator of cell towers that has invested in AST SpaceMobile, also stand to benefit by providing essential infrastructure or adapting their business models to support this evolving connectivity.

Rakuten Card aiming for 100 billion yen profit, eyes 1,100 trillion yen B2B market

TOKYO, March 25  Japan's largest credit card company, Rakuten Card, is aiming to almost double its annual operating profit to 100 billion yen ($663.7 million) in the medium term and sees opportunity in expanding into the largely untapped business-to-business payments market, its new chief executive officer said.

Rakuten Card, which can only be applied for online and is part of Rakuten - an e-commerce and financial services conglomerate - has ridden this wave to issue more than 30 million credit cards to date and booked an operating profit of 62.1 billion yen in 2024, up more than 20% on 2023.
While credit card payments now make up around a third of consumer spending in Japan, less than 10 trillion yen of a total 1,100 trillion yen in business to business transactions are made by credit card, Rakuten Card CEO Koichi Nakamura told Reuters in an interview.

"It's really not a red ocean so it makes sense for us to enter the market without delay," Nakamura said.

08.10.25 17:02 #13598 Rakuten to offer Bilt Rewards points?

By Greg The Frequent Miler
October 7, 2025

I love the Rakuten shopping portal because it regularly offers great deals (in fact, as I write this, they’re offering 10%/10x at many merchants via their “Big Stack” event), great signup bonuses (currently they’re offering 5K points or $50), and, best of all, they allow you to earn rewards as cash back or Amex Membership Rewards points. I earn a ton of Membership Rewards points this way! Now, it appears that they have accidentally leaked the news that they may be offering Bilt Rewards as an additional option! If this happens and they provide the same 1-to-1 payout as with Amex, this would be amazing!

Bilt Rewards points are probably the single most valuable points for transferring to airline and hotel partners. They support a fantastic array of airline programs, including one-to-one transfers to Alaska Atmos, JAL, Avios, Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Southwest, United, and more. Additionally, on the hotel front, they offer one-to-one transfers to Hyatt!

The problem with Bilt Rewards is that unless you spend a lot on rent, it has been hard to earn Bilt points in large numbers. If this Rakuten thing pans out, though, that will quickly change. I know that I’ll change my Rakuten earnings from Membership Rewards to Bilt!
