"Companies are pouring into the solar power industry, which Branz said is a $10-billion-a-year industry worldwide.
"I've been in the business, in the research area, for 25 years," he said. "I've never seen anything like the last year or two. The industry has been growing 40 to 60 percent a year for a decade now."
XsunX and MV Systems are working on a production method that promises to be cheaper than traditional thin-film manufacturing. The idea is to lower the temperature needed to fuse the tiny solar cells to film to below 150 degrees Celsius. Typically, it's been done above 300 degrees Celsius, Djokovich said.
Lowering the temperature allows the company to use less-expensive polyester films already used for routine window tinting and as backing for safety glass. It costs $1 per square yard, compared to $12 per square yard for film that can withstand the higher temperatures used in traditional manufacturing processes, Djokovich said.
The process XsunX and MV Systems are pursuing makes large sheets of solar cells that are interconnected and look like regular tinted film for windows, he said.
"The innovative designs and manufacturing systems produce higher quality at lower costs. And we'll market those technologies," Djokovich said.
That's where the Golden facility comes into play."
